Vacation's Almost Over...

©2007 S.W. Haddock, Jr

Backyard summer vacations for indoor plants and tropicals, will soon be over. As days grow shorter and nights cooler, we get ready to bring those lush specimens indoors. We'll inspect them for insects or diseases, treating as necessary to forestall indoor infestations. In sunny windows, plant rooms and greenhouses, we'll coddle these tender beauties throughout the winter. Beauties? Well, they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

As I quizzed Shutterbug about the planet of origin for the above specimen, he assured me it is a tropical specimen from planet earth. Have you guessed by now? That's right - it's an unnamed Brugmansia hybrid, whose flower form falls somewhere between semi-double and double. I won't repeat all the Brugmansia maintenance details here, but I will refer you back to my "gardenauthor" postings (with photos of single Brugmansias) of 8/7/07 and 8/11/07.

At any rate, Sam deserves props for maintaining a collection of tender and tropical specimens - a tricky proposition in the wilds of Maine. Some spend their winter "down time" in a less active or semi-dormant state, within the confines of his plant room. Others continue to flourish and even produce blossoms to brighten the dreary winter days. An occasional hitchhiker has been known to take advantage of Sam's movable jungle... ie. the tree frog photos and saga, of July 9, on this blog.

What I do admire about this photo, is the play of light and shadow, with the sun filtering through the foliage. It takes patience and vigilance to capture a subject in its best light.
