Annisquam Light

Annisquam Light, Gloucester

Courtesy of Shutterbug's late September trip to Massachusetts, we are treated to a fine view of this old lighthouse station. Located on Wigwam Point, at the northern end of Annisquam River (Ipswich Bay), the current 41' brick tower was built in 1897... but it boasts a history that dates back to 1801, when the first light tower was built. The original wooden tower was all but falling down, by the time a new 40' octagonal wooden tower was built in 1851.

Above we see the keeper's cottage, as well. This was repaired when the second tower was constructed. Over the intervening years, it has remained in use and undergone alterations and expansion. From 1867 to the early 1900's, the 109' space between house and tower was bridged by a covered walkway, later replaced by an open footbridge.

The present cylindrical, 41' tower was constructed (1897) on the same foundation as the previous wooden towers. Annisquam light was automated in 1974 is maintained by the Coast Guard, with a Coast Guard family living in the keeper's cottage. Reconstructive work on the tower during the 1990's was completed in 2000, as well as a new roof on the cottage.

With a rich New England history, Annisquam light is a fascinating read, or maybe a day trip. For more details, along with groundings and rescues, click on Annisquam Lighthouse and learn the rest of the story.
